What Is a Scalp Analysis?

What happens during a scalp analysis and how to prepare for your visit.

By Dr. Leola Anifowoshe Brown ·

A closer look than the mirror allows

A scalp analysis uses magnified imaging to show what you can't see at home: follicle openings, strand thickness, buildup, flaking and density across different areas of the scalp.

What happens during your visit

Your Trichologist reviews your history, examines the scalp and strands, and walks you through the images in plain language. You leave with a documented baseline so future change can be measured rather than guessed.

How to prepare

Come with your usual styling, avoid heavy products for a day if you can, and bring a list of medications, recent life changes and any lab results your physician has shared with you.

Frequently asked questions

Does a scalp analysis hurt?
No. The imaging is non-invasive and simply rests against the scalp.
Can I do it virtually?
A Virtual Hair & Scalp Consultation covers history and visible concerns; magnified imaging requires an in-person visit.
Where is your clinic?
13201 Northwest Freeway, Suite 512, Houston, TX 77040 — near US-290, Beltway 8 and Loop 610, serving Houston, Cypress, Katy, Spring and The Woodlands.

Begin with an investigation, not a guess.
