Textured Hair

Black hair loss in Houston, understood on its own terms.

Textured hair has its own structure, its own styling history and its own patterns of loss. Being told 'it's just breakage' after years of careful care is not an answer.

Why textured hair needs a specific eye

Curl pattern changes how a strand behaves under tension, how product sits on the scalp, and where stress accumulates. Loss along the edges, at the crown or in a spreading central patch each carry different histories.

We look at styling history without judgment: protective styles, heat, chemical services, extensions and years of the routines that were available at the time.

Founded by a Trichologist who does this work

Dr. Leola Anifowoshe-Brown, PhD — The Hair Loss Detective™ — founded this clinic and the National Alopecia Foundation for People of Color™, and much of our research and education focuses on hair loss in people of color.

That focus shows up in the room: in the questions asked, the patterns recognized, and the pathways that account for how you actually wear your hair.

In person is worth the drive

Textured hair is one of the clearest cases for being seen in person. Density is hard to judge through a camera when hair is curly, coiled or installed in a style, and the scalp is where the answers are.

Clients travel to Northwest Houston from Missouri City, Pearland, Sugar Land and Katy for precisely this reason.

Questions

Before you book.

Will I be told to stop wearing protective styles?

No. We look at how styles are installed, how long they stay and how much tension they carry, and work toward what fits your life rather than an all-or-nothing rule.

Is it too late if my edges have been thin for years?

It is worth investigating either way. A close look tells us what the follicles are showing now, which is the only honest basis for what comes next.

Do you work with natural, relaxed and locked hair?

Yes — all textures and all styling histories.

Should I take my style down before the appointment?

Where possible, come with the scalp accessible. If that is not realistic, tell us what you are wearing when you book and we will advise.

Can you tell the difference between breakage and shedding?

Under magnification, yes — the end of the strand tells us whether it broke or released from the follicle, and that changes everything about the pathway.

Is thinning at the crown always CCCA?

No. Several patterns show up at the crown, which is exactly why an investigation rather than an assumption matters here.

Do you see men with textured hair?

Yes, including thinning edges from durags and line-ups, and crown thinning.
