Traction Alopecia
Traction alopecia in Houston.
Traction alopecia comes from sustained tension — tight styles, heavy extensions, repeated placement in the same spots. It usually shows first at the hairline, temples and nape.

The window matters
Early on, follicles under tension are stressed but intact. Left long enough, the same area can scar, and scarred areas do not regrow. That is the whole reason to look sooner rather than later.
Magnified imaging tells us which stage a given area is in, which is not something you can judge from a mirror.
Practical, not puritanical
We are not going to tell you to stop wearing the styles you love. We look at tension, installation, duration and rotation, and find the version that takes the pressure off your hairline.
Alongside that, we support the scalp itself and set a review schedule so you can see whether the change is holding.
Bring your stylist into it
A great deal of progress happens in the chair, not the clinic. We will give you specific, practical things to ask for at your next appointment.
Clients often bring photographs of styles they want to keep wearing so we can talk about them concretely.

Questions
Before you book.
Will my edges grow back?
It depends on whether the follicles are stressed or scarred, which is what the investigation establishes. Areas caught early often respond well once tension is removed.
Do I have to take my style down for the appointment?
Not necessarily. Tell us what you are wearing when you book and we will advise what gives us the clearest look.
How long before I know if something is working?
Edges move slowly. We compare images at intervals of several months, because that is the honest timescale for hair.
How tight is too tight?
A useful rule: if it stings, tingles or gives you a headache, it is too tight. Bumps along the hairline afterwards are another clear signal.
Are wigs and units safer than braids?
Not automatically — glue, combs and tight bands create their own tension. How something is secured matters more than what it is.
Can men get traction alopecia?
Yes, commonly from tight line-ups, durags, twists and man buns.
Should I see a dermatologist too?
If we see signs that belong with a physician, we will tell you plainly and support that care alongside your pathway.
